Excellent book, shows why country is relevant
This is a really smart and sometimes funny book that covers a lot of ground. It covers the whole spectrum of thought among country music stars, from the conservatism of Brooks Dunn and Sara Evans to the liberalism of the Dixie Chicks and Rodney Crowell. No matter where you stand on the sociopolitical spectrum, you will find some artists representing your viewpoints here, and just about all of them come off as thoughtful and informed, contrary to certain stereotypes. The author, who writes for Entertainment Weekly, has interviewed people like Merle Haggard, Willie Nelson, Toby Keith, Lee Ann Womack, Steve Earle, Ricky Skaggs, Linda Ronstadt, Craig Morgan, Alan Jackson, Chely Wright, Nanci Griffith, Gretchen Wilson, Kris Kristofferson, SheDaisy, Charlie Daniels, Drive-by Truckers, Buddy Miller, Rosanne Cash, Mark Chesnutt, Tim McGraw, Todd Snider and probably plenty more I'm not thinking of. If you just want to read them dishing on each other and their own creative processes, and don't care about the politics, you probably won't be disappointed. But if you actually care about the important issues of the day and what people like these have to say about 'em, you'll really love this book. It makes a great case that country--including mainstream country and alt-country--steps up to the plate is more relevant in troubled or contentious times than any other kind of music.
