Dolly's return to country tinged music...
Many people suggest Dolly is a master at reinventing herself. I think she is a master of recycling herself. With five decades of entertainment experience under her wig, she is a true American entertainment icon. She is a master of marketing the Dolly Parton brand and few entertainment figures can match her record of longevity and business acumen.
What continues to escape her are big country hit records and play on new country stations. With this cd, she is making an effort to remedy that problem.
Aside from Reba, country stations simply don't seem to be interested in spinning country veteran's music. The first single (Better Get to Livin') hasn't performed too well on the charts or on country music station playlists. The second single (Jesus and Gravity) seems like more of the same, although it has been singled out in reviews I have read as a solid attempt at a "playable" song on contemporary country stations.
As a songwriter, Dolly has depth and simplicity at the same time.
Several of the songs, (Shinola and Cologne) are interesting takes on love and infidelity.
The track "Backwoods Barbie" is an autobiographical song that Dolly wrote for the stage version of Nine to Five which she recently completed. Overall I think the album is a solid listening experience and a must for fans. I am afraid though it might not achieve the goal of returning Dolly to regular play on country music stations.
